SAN FRANCISCO CA, June 23, 2020 — Golden State Opportunity President Amy Everitt has issued a statement regarding a recent budget agreement in California that aims to extend the benefits of the California Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC) to immigrant families. As part of this deal, families using an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to pay their taxes and have children under the age of 6 will now be eligible for this tax credit. By expanding the eligibility criteria, the state is taking a step towards supporting immigrant families and ensuring their inclusion in the tax credit program. This decision reflects a commitment to providing equal opportunities and benefits for all residents, regardless of their immigration status. The Golden State Opportunity President acknowledges the significance of this expansion and emphasizes the positive impact it will have on immigrant families in California.
We express our appreciation to Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature for their dedication in incorporating immigrant workers with young children into the CalEITC program. In this challenging period, it is crucial to extend this successful poverty-alleviating initiative to families who contribute through ITIN taxes but are unfortunately excluded from other forms of economic assistance. It is only fair for individuals who diligently work and fulfill their tax obligations to receive equal refunds when they file their tax returns. Regrettably, this fairness has only been achieved for a portion of ITIN workers, leaving many without. At Golden State Opportunity, we will persistently advocate for an all-embracing CalEITC program that aids every Californian in achieving financial stability and prospering.
