SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 14, 2020 — In light of Governor Gavin Newsom's recent revision to his proposed budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, President Amy Everitt of Golden State Opportunity has released the subsequent statement:
Although I appreciate Governor Newsom's decision to continue the CalEITC as a $1 billion program, I believe its effectiveness is being diminished due to his reduction in education and outreach grants that provide support for it. In fact, it is now more crucial than ever to reach out to both current and newly qualified Californians who are facing financial instability during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many middle-class individuals in California have lost their jobs and are now eligible for the EITC refund, but are unaware of this opportunity. This is why we strongly urge the Legislature to reinstate the funding, ensuring that every eligible worker receives the money they have rightfully earned.
