During the past few weeks, a significant number of individuals residing in California have witnessed a significant decline in their financial stability and a drastic alteration in their previous way of life, possibly rendering it irrelevant, as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In such uncertain times, it becomes increasingly challenging to determine the appropriate source of reliable information, necessary support, or even a literal means of survival.
There is no doubt that millions of families across the state are in need of immediate cash. And on this day, which would have been Tax Day, we have access to assistance available right at our fingertips. Although the federal stimulus package serves as a significant initial measure, it does not suffice in effectively supporting families enduring the aftermath of unemployment and income loss. In light of the unprecedented surge in unemployment rates within a single month, additional actions must be taken to assist those who are grappling with the repercussions of losing their jobs, livelihoods, and sense of security.
We already have a well-established program that has been proven to be effective in providing financial assistance to low-income workers. This program allows them to receive hundreds or even thousands of dollars directly into their pockets, all without having to leave the comfort of their homes. I'm referring to the Earned Income Tax Credits (EITCs) offered at both the state and federal levels. These credits are readily accessible at this very moment.
While our lawmakers continue to strive for the enactment of additional regulations to safeguard our most susceptible citizens, numerous households are unable to delay, and fortunately, they do not need to do so.
During this challenging period, the thought of taxes may not even cross the minds of many individuals, especially considering the recent extension of the filing deadline to July 15th. However, it is essential for them to be aware that in order to receive the $1,200 stimulus check, they must file a tax return for either 2018 or 2019. Additionally, they might not know that they could potentially obtain a refund of up to $8,000 through the EITC when they file their tax return. Lastly, it is important for them to realize that they can access this money by submitting their tax return. for free online.
The EITC, or Earned Income Tax Credit, is a government program that provides a cash refund to low-income workers. Annually, a whopping $63 billion dollars is claimed in EITC refunds by 25 million individuals. However, it is estimated that an additional 5 million eligible workers fail to take advantage of this tax credit.
In 2015, the state of California unveiled the CalEITC, a state Earned Income Tax Credit program that has grown to become a billion-dollar initiative. This year, the state expanded its support for working parents by introducing the Young Child Tax Credit, which provides eligible individuals with a $1,000 credit for children under the age of six. To qualify for these benefits, individuals simply need to possess a Social Security Number, be above the age of 18, and earn less than $56,000 for the federal credit and $30,000 for the California credit.
Today, with the aim of guaranteeing that every CalEITC dollar is returned to low-income employees during their times of crisis, Golden State Opportunity is launching the ‘Million 4 a Billion’ initiative. The primary goal of this campaign is to ensure that the $1 billion designated for CalEITC refunds is directly provided to workers who are in dire need of immediate financial assistance due to job cuts, reduction in income, and overall economic insecurity.
Over the upcoming weeks, we will initiate communication with a million individuals from the low-income workforce, inquiring if they would be interested in setting up a meeting to electronically submit their tax returns without any charges, with the added advantage of receiving virtual assistance from a volunteer trained by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
An ETIC refund itself will not guarantee economic stability for the people of California during our recovery from the unprecedented effects of COVID-19. However, since it is already accessible, it serves as a practical aspect of our overall response.
As the head of Golden State Opportunity, it is my conviction that it is our duty to utilize all available means to empower those facing hardships. While numerous organizations are rightfully prioritizing the pressing and immediate requirements of secure housing, nourishment, and healthcare availability, possessing cash is equally crucial for ensuring the overall welfare of individuals.
Our 'Million 4 a Billion campaign' offers a speedy method of providing financial assistance to our compatriots in need.
